The evening recovery ritual.

The evening recovery ritual.

The end of the day deserves more than a screen and a sigh. A short ritual, fifteen minutes or sometimes less, is enough to tell the body that the work is done and rest is permitted.

Begin with warmth

Drape a heated wrap across the shoulders. Sit for a few minutes with nothing. No screen, no task, no plan. Let the warmth do its slow, persuasive work on the muscles that have been holding the day.

Move to touch

A few minutes of slow percussion on the legs. A balm pressed into the forearms. A gua sha stone, drawn gently along the jaw and the back of the neck. The body responds to touch the way it responds to language. Slowly, then all at once.

Done often enough, the body learns the sequence. The mind follows.

End in stillness

  • ·Lights low. Phones in another room.
  • ·A long exhale, then another. No counting.
  • ·A glass of water. Bed. Nothing else.
